What is Microsoft Access?
Microsoft Access is a management system for databases developed by the Microsoft Company. It combines the Microsoft Jet Database Engine to a graphical user interphase and with other software development tools. Microsoft Access is part of the Microsoft office suite. For additional knowledge about Microsoft Access, read review here.
Microsoft Access stores data in a format that has its base in the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also link or import data that has been stored in other databases and applications directly.
Custom software development companies and data architects can use Microsoft Access in developing application software. Microsoft Access is supported by Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
Microsoft Access is used primarily as a database storage file. However it serves other purposes such as Microsoft SQL Server that is used as a front-end of a program while other products such as Oracle and Sybase are used as the back-end tables. A number of back-end sources can also be used by a Microsoft Access Jet Database. Similarly, Microsoft Access can be integrated with other technologies such as MS Outlook, MSWord, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and ActiveX Controls as part of a complex solution. See additional info here, to find out more about Microsoft Access.
Software programmers can create software solutions by using VBA that is used in Microsoft Office programs such as MSWord, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook. A Microsoft Access developer can extend the basic end user solutions to a higher level of professionalism where it provides solutions such as error trapping, data validation, multi user support and advanced automation.
Microsoft Access’s versions prior to2010 were limited in that features such as reports and forms would only work in Windows. Data Access Pages created web pages that were publishable in MS Access 2000 to 2003 only but are now no longer supported. The Microsoft Jet Database Engine is accessible through ODBC or OLE DB while data is accessible through web based applications that have been developed in PHP ASP.NET or Java. Organizations can host Microsoft Access applications run over the web using Remote Desktop Application in Windows Server 2008 R2. This technique limits the number of users depending on the host’s configuration .
The Microsoft Access 2010 version allows publishing of databases to SharePoint 2010 websites that run can Access Services in any modern web browser. The web forms and web reports that are accessed through a web browser, don’t require any extensions or add-ins.
The Microsoft Access 2013 version allows publishing of databases to SharePoint 2013 websites that can run Access Services with a back end SQL Server database. This server is more robust and scalable as compared to the Access 2010 version that used SharePoint lists to store data.
In order to prevent end uses from gaining access to the design surfaces for the purposes of modifying module code, forms, and reports, a MDE/ACCDE file is created. This database file has all editable source code and all modules compiled removed. An ADE file is another Microsoft Access project file which has all compiled modules and all editable source code removed. Both of these file extensions are used to restrict modifications by end-users and also to maintain the confidentiality of the source code.
