Common types of cable insulations

Spread the love

Cable manufacturers such as the PVC Cable manufacturers always put an insulation covering on their cables. The insulation is made from a number of materials that is a non conductor of current, and is able to resist electric current. The insulation provides protection to the cable and its surroundings in the following ways. For instance, it prevents current from the cables from getting into contact with other parts that are good conductors of current or electricity. It also protects the wires from external threats such as abrasion, water or heat. This ensures that the safety and usefulness of the wire is not compromised. There are many different types of materials that are used as insulators. Some of the most common ones include the following.
One of the most common insulators is the Plastics. Plastics include a number of products such as Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC as it is popularly known. This is an affordable, easy to use material that has the ability to be used for many different uses. The good thing about plastic is that it is able to resist solvents, acids and even petroleum products like gasoline. Not only is it odorless, but it is also not toxic. It can be used to provide insulation for wires that have thin walls and even those that are thick. There are several variations of plastics, which help to address the different insulation needs that may exist in the market. For instance the semi rigid PVC that is able to resist abrasion, water, heat, acids and is also flame retardant. Click this for more information and for inquiries.
Another category of the insulator is the rubber. In this category, there are the thermoplastic Rubber, the neoprene and the styrene butadiene rubber. Rubber insulation broadly refers to natural and artificial rubber compounds. The rubbers come in an array of formulas and applications. It is therefore not unusual to find rubber insulations that work in different temperatures. Rubber generally is wanting when it comes to resistance against heat, oil and ozone. The upside is that rubber is resistant to water, abrasion and alcohol and it has desirable electrical properties. The rubbers provide numerous color varieties that a person can choose from, they also offer higher processing speeds. A number of UTP LAN cable manufacturers use rubber to manufacture their cables.
There are other types of insulators that attempt to capture the best of the plastics and the rubber. These are the Fluoropolymers. These insulators consist of polymers; rubber and plastic so as to add up the benefits of each insulator to come up with a better product. They therefore have a wide range of application since they have a number of desirable qualities. The disadvantage of these insulators however, is that they are quite costly to produce. Consequently they are expensive than other insulation types. Lastly there are other types of insulation materials such as the Silicone and the Fiberglass. Silicone is highly resistant to heat and it is also flame retardant, with good bonding properties. Fiberglass is resistant to chemicals, heat and moisture and is ideal for heat treating.
